'Injected With A Poison' is, irrefutably, a rave classic whose enduring popularity has resulted in innumerable and regular re-releases. As a lover of the original I generally greeted the reworks with derision on account of the fact that they appeared to be almost uniformly hard-house hoovertastic affairs that couldn't hold a candle to the original. However, the US re-release from 1998 featured this gem nestled in its midst, care of the ever-dependable DJ Taucher. Taucher's remix thankfully foregrounds the piano, excises the chainsaws and ultimately constitutes a behemothic, yet tastefully updated, trance number.

Don't Minds If I Do

Released in 1996 - a belting year for Perfecto, as well as dance music in general - 'Brand New Day' is a joyous, rapturous affair encapsulating the epic house sound and featuring some powerhouse vocals (I'm not entirely sure whose, as the vocalist isn't credited, but it sounds not dissimilar to Merle Forbes, of Planet Perfecto and Konkrete fame). This excellent edit by the legendary Dekkard & Dane is everything you'd expect of one of their productions, epic, uplifting, just huge. Why a full length remix was never issued is beyond me. D&D's edit is nicely complemented by a proggier version from Quivver, basking in the wake of his phenomenal remix of 'Dreamtime' by fellow Perfecto artist Zee.

Magic Wand

This track was promo'd in 1997 and did some serious damage owing both to the mammoth original mix and the superlative reworks from Forthright and John 00 Fleming. Produced by legendary hard house and hardbag exponent Paul Masterson, 'Happiness' constitutes a joyous and frantic offering showcasing the awesome vocals of Jeanie Tracy. Though scheduled for a release on Deconstriction, the track was pulled, purportedly as its theme was deemed incompatible with 'the mood of the nation' following Lady Di's demise; which is a bit harsh. Surely she would have approved?

Serial Killer

'Your Love' marked Inner City's return from something of a hiatus, their previous release being the rather more underground 'Ahnongay'. 

'Your Love' was co-produced by Serial Diva, who stamp their highly distinct mark on proceedings; the monumental build up yielding eventually to some rhapsodical piano complemented of course by the silky vocals of Paris Grey and Ann Saunderson. 

This is my favourite Inner City track, it was massive at the end of '95 and enhanced the profile of Serial Diva as a production force to be reckoned with.

Alright all, I hope you are all well out there and are enjoying the Euro 2012 football.
Good to see England finally get a win last night, although yet again it was pretty unbearable to watch.
As much as I try to be the eternal optimist - I have to admit we're pretty crap really and haven't got a hope in hell of winning the tournament.
I would dearly hope that these words come back to haunt me and I eat humble pie, but I just don't see it.
Come on England - "Feel the Energy" you need all the support you can get!!!
Alright back to the music, here's an absolutely blockbuster of a track.
Packed full of energy, life and vibrance with some delightful piano thrown in for good measure.
It takes a while to get going so be patient, but boy does it explode!
This was a really great track back int'day in 1992 and a real floor filler, it was just one of those tracks that everyone loved and we all went wild to.
Top notch, I say!!

Tune of the holiday!!!

Alright people I hope all is well.
I've just arrived back from my hols and this was definitely the tune of the holiday.
Yes, I know it its terribly commercial (and cheesy) but I'm loving it at the moment.
I hardly went to the clubbing capital of the world (Gumbet, Turkey), but a clubbing holiday wasn't on the agenda (I'm much too old for that) although we did manage a night at Club Pasha until 4am.
However, the music was absolutely dreadful cheesy, chart nonsense and a DJ who couldn't even mix, we had a good night though, although it wasn't clubbing as I know it.
About the track, well it's just dead catchy, very current and features a rather attractive young lady from Romania Alexandra Stan (pictured) singing rather some nice catchy vocals.

However, as with many many dance tracks I love, it's the piano which really makes it special.
Look I know it's cheesy, but have a few listens, talk about catchy.

Breathe Again

This track was an absolute bugger to get hold of from start to finish. Released on 2 x 12" promo in Autumn 1998 on the 3 Beat label, it was - for some reason - denied a commercial release. It was, however, released in Australia - cue faxing one's credit card details to some obscure record shop in Cairns in a bid to acquire it on CD single. Some weeks later, it finally arrived. Tekara is a sobriquet of trance aficionado Matt Darey, and the original version of this track is a melodious breakbeat affair in a similar vein to his remix of 'The Silence' by Mike Koglin (released around the same time). What elevates 'Breathe In You' is the stunning Lost Tribe remix, which injects some much needed oomph and transforms the track into a stratosphere cruising monster which even features something of a wah-wah bassline common to speed garage at the time. 'Breathe In You' is a just killer, the very definition of euphoria trance and a sorely overlooked classic.

Solar Powered

A bona fide classic all round here, rejuvenated for a 1998 re-release by the ever-dependable Stress label (the stable that brought us Freefall and Sunday Club, amongst others). 

The bootleg mix layers the vocal from Pamela Fernandez' 1994 Ore-released 'Kickin' in the Beat' over the original instrumental, whilst Chris & James' own remake comes complete with the customary drama and ivory-tinkling one would expect from two of the most influential exponents of the 'epic house' genre.

This vocal trancer did some severe damage back in the summer of 1999, thanks in no small measure to a truly epic remix from Matt Darey. In a year where trance music peaked, to the point of saturation, 'Sun is Shining' still stood out as being a sweeping anthem of the first order. There was also a remix released from Brothers In Rhythm, but that was nowhere near as interesting as this little belter. Quite an appropriate posting given that the sun has, for once, been shining.

It is a huge, huge fave of mine and was a sensational track which used to devastate the dancefloor when heard in clubs.

The recent passing of Donna Summer put me in mind of another disco legend who left the land of the living last year. Though she has already been tributed on these pages, the peerless contribution of Loleatta Holloway to the club classics canon surely warrants further recognition. Rather than posting some of the usual suspects - Cevin Fisher, Black Box, Cappella, Lenny Fontana - which predominately sample different parts of the vocal from 'Love Sensation', here are a few rather more obscure examples of Ms Holloway's original recordings, including the highly apposite 'No Apology'. What an incredible voice; her ubiquity spanned literally decades, from Salsoul to Fire Island to Sunshine State; from Dan Hartman to Melted Artists to Johnny Vicious. I include the tribal house remix of 'Shout to the Top' by Club 69 on account of the fact that this is the version I remember boogeying on down to back in '98.

All Good Strings...

You may remember this track from the caning it used to receive on Sky Sports. You may also recollect it owing to its appearance on the 'Adventures in Tin Tin Out Land EP' which surfaced in the summer of '96. Following the release of the aforementioned extended player, 'Strings For Yasmin' took on a life of its own, its popularity culminating in a single release in 1997. It's a great example of dramatic trance belter replete with orchestration and a bit of opera chucked in for good measure. Tin Tin Out did some jaw-droppingly good remixes in their day, but their own productions were generally pretty decent.

It was very sad to hear of the death of Donna Summer this week.
Donna was one of the iconic Disco divas and "I Feel Love" was considered by many to be the birth of disco. Several of her tracks are posted on the blog and here is another classic.
This one from 1989 has had a fierce re-working by Clivilles and Cole, who produced some real gems.
It showcases both Donna's vocal talents and also the real quality of C&C's production.
It's got some lovely piano, some funky vibes and an all round great feel.

There's a Marathon ahead!!!

Alright peeps. I hope you are all well.
I know I only recently posted this track, but it's such a cracker that it won't harm to put it up again.
It has a massive classic from 1990 hammered by the likes of Sasha and most of the other top Jocks of that era.
There were many mixes but this was the best. Absolutely top drawer piano = lovely!!
The reason why I'm posting it again is principally due to the title "Marathon".
I've taken the plunge and decided to commit to running my first marathon, which is pretty brave to say I've never run further than 5 miles (in one go) in my life.
I'm running for a very worthwhile charity called "Get Kids Going" http://www.getkidsgoing.com/ which aims to provide opportunities for young disabled people to participate in Sport.
Sport has played a wonderful part in my life and is one of my passions along with House Music of course.

Why naked? Any ideas?

This is an old classic, very raw but very effective.
You get the feeling with this one that it's not really going anywhere and then you get these huge piano explosions just thrown in.
This was a big track back in 1990.
It's very raw and minimalistic but very powerful at the same time.
A top workout by Frank De Wulf.

Save the Drowning Man!!

I've had this one lined up to post for many months, but never got round to it until now.
It's a peach of a track and you'll notice the D-Ream influence as soon as you hear it.
You probably wouldn't identify much of a Duran Duran element, but it an excellent track.
Very much in a floaty proggy type feel, we flows nicely and has some lovely piano chords which build and build.
Some good choice lyrics as well

I can never decide which version I prefer as they are both excellent, so I've posted the ambient mix as well.

Another massive fave of mine from 1993.
There was no better feel than listening to this in a club.
As soon as that riff kicked in it was massive a "hands in the air" moment.
It was impossible to keep them down.
Just close your eyes and think back.
Sheer heaven!!
Some big tracks came out of Scotland on the Limbo and 23rd Precinct labels around that time.
I've also added the Yazoo version where the sample was pulled from.
That too is an undisputed classic and one of my favourite Balearic anthems. Bliss!!

Hip hop don't you stop!!!

This was an absolutely massive track back in 1991 (and another Hac biggie).
It was the Masters At Work dub which was the most widely played version, which is one of the shortest house tracks around at only 3min 23secs, but for every one of those seconds it was immense.
Again top, top house music.
However, I always love the vocal version which while certainly less widely played in clubs is still a fabulous track. I love the piano in it. Immense.
Both absolute belters IMHO.
By the way this has little to do with Hip Hop, it's A1 house music!!

This has been in my list of tracks for ages, yet I keep thinking that I must have posted it by now and hence keep overlooking it.
It was a big fave of mine and a huge Hac anthem which Mr Park used to hammer back in 1992.
It's a great example of classic house music, great vocals, great lyrics, crunching beats and of course that all important piano.
Top top house music.

'Cry Freedom' constitutes another seminal house classic that was absolutely ubiquitous when first released in 1992. Suffused with African sensibilities and featuring some sublime piano, this genre-straddling track had such longevity that an inevitable reissue occurred in early 1997. Presented here is the peerless original mix alongside the more contemporary-sounding '97 re-edit.

Now this is just a hands-down stormer of the first order. Released in 1993 as the follow up to the monumental 'France', 'Feel So Good' is an expertly crafted Euro-house affair replete with piano flourishes and an energised final minute in which the record takes on a life of its own. This track - along with output from Glam, Pan Position, Atlantic Ocean and Datura - epitomised the burgeoning Euro sound of early 1993.

Hyper-active

Hyper Go Go were responsible for some of the most bouncy and piano-intensive house tracks of the early '90s. 

Perhaps best known for the Rhythm Masters-remixed 'High', which crossed over into the UK charts upon its '96 re-issue, the act released a clutch of singles all of the highest calibre. 

'Never Let Go' was Positiva-released in 1993 with the aptly named 'Piano mix' proving the definitive version. 

As its name suggests, this is a gargantuan piano effort that has aged very well considering its venerability.

Of course it is based on the magnificent "Binary Finary - 1999", one of my favourite all time trance tracks.

Bring out the Violins!!

Now you'll all be familiar with Ferry Corsten's alter ego - System F and the massively popular "Out Of The Blue" which was one of the big trance tunes of the late 90's.
However, you may be less familiar with this remix, which IMHO is exquisite.
I've always been a sucker for tracks that slow down in the middle and those tracks are always superb on the dance floor; "Bells of New York" and "Carte Blanche" are just two that spring to mind (both already posted on the PCC blog).
This is equally impressive, in that it is fast paced pumping trance, which then breakdowns to some amazing Violin strings and piano, which just blows your mind.
I believe that Tiesto was behind the remix. Nice work fella, very impressive indeed.

You'll all be very familiar with the original mix, which was banged out in many a club circa 1991.
It is a typical Italian House piano classic.
And yes, I know it's a bit cheesy sounding now, but it was massive back in't day and you must admit that when the piano kicks in, it's impossible to stop the foot tapping!!
Probably less well known, but equally fantastic is the T-Empo remix, which IMHO is a pure work of art.
It keeps the feel of the original, but tempts and teases and then delivers (big time).

Kinane scored a clutch of club hits in the late nineties, including the gargantuan 'Heaven' - as remixed by Danny Tenaglia and Paul Gotel (a previous post), and the Lisa Marie Experience re-tweaked 'So Fine'. 'Business' was released on Coalition in 1998 featuring a slew of remixes, the pick of the bunch from Paul Gotel, whose epic excursion consists of a roof-raising trancer that foregrounds Kinane's snappy vocals and comes complete with a massive breakdown.

Another massive piano moment, this time from 1992. Italian artiste Jinny brought us the better-known 'Keep Warm' in '91, which proved a momentous crossover hit some four years later upon its reissue on the Multiply label. 'Never Give Up', released on Faze 2, is a straight-up Italo-dance affair in its original form, taken to extremes by Phil Kelsey, whose remix pares down the vocal and injects a monstrously dramatic piano breakdown.

Can we get together!

I've been saving this one up for a while, as it's an absolutely cracking track and one that I truly love.
Apologies, if it's a bit too commercial/poppy for the purists amongst you out there.
However, in my mind it is truly sensational.
Natasha is one of my favourite female vocalists and a hugely talented singer-song writer.
There's also been some great remixes of her tracks and several have been posted on the blog.
This remix is probably my favourite and is up there as one of my all time favourite tracks.
Let me know your thoughts on this.
Her vocals are sensational on this track, the lyrics (like all her tracks are superb) I'm running out of superlatives, so I'll stop there.

This little-known track appeared at the tail-end of one of the Global Underground albums in 1998, possibly as compiled by Nick Warren. Evincing a South American timbre, this atmospheric instrumental builds to the wondrous crescendo which succeeds one almighty breakdown, after which it cascades into lush and uplifting piano for the remainder of the track. This is the very definition of an underrated classic, and a must for anyone who likes their piano big, bold and brassy (so to speak).

Lisa Moorish scored a succession of club hits circa 1994-95 with the likes of 'Beautiful Morning', 'I'm Your Man' and 'Just the Way It Is', as remixed by the likes of Tin Tin Out, E Smoove and Loveland, respectively. 'Mr Friday Night' is representative of the pick of the bunch, owing in no small measure to a sensational rework from Tall Paul and Tin Tin Out, whose Goodfellos remould outclasses those supplied by Wubble U and Deep Dish. A pounding behemoth of a track with classy vocals and an awesome breakdown, 'Mr Friday Night' decimated many a dancefloor in early 1996.
