Two fantastic vocal divas and two fantastic tracks.
The original Chaka version was from 1974, with this remix from 1978.
The Whitney version has a superb remix by C&C and came out in 1993.
Which is best?
IMHO they are both great, but I think the Whitney version just edges it, mainly courtesy of the great C&C remix and as good as Chaka's vocals are, nobody can out-sing Whitney!
It was very sad to hear of the death of Donna Summer this week.
Donna was one of the iconic Disco divas and "I Feel Love" was considered by many to be the birth of disco. Several of her tracks are posted on the blog and here is another classic.
This one from 1989 has had a fierce re-working by Clivilles and Cole, who produced some real gems.
It showcases both Donna's vocal talents and also the real quality of C&C's production.
It's got some lovely piano, some funky vibes and an all round great feel.
Enjoy!!
Donna Summer - first lady of disco!! R.I.P.
Donna Summer - Love's About To Change My Heart (Clivilles and Cole 12" Mix)
Here's an absolutely blinding house classic.
Don't be put off by remembering back to the cheesy version which hit the pop charts in 1990.
This mix is the real deal.
It's an amazing track which feels like about 5 tracks in one, it changes style and tempo so many times and keeps you entirely engrossed throughout.
It's got some great piano laced in, thumping, crunching beats, but the best bit is when the riff kicks in at 2mins 32 secs. That is one massive moment. Just tops!!!
Also give it a few listens as it gets better every time you listen to it.
Love the ending as well when they are all chattering!
It was a big Hacienda classic to boot and hammered by Mr Park.
Clivilles and Cole were one of the greatest remix combo's ever and produced some remarkable tracks back in't day. This is one of their finest. Immense in every way.
If you don't like this, then you don't like house music period!!!
C&C Music Factory - Just A Touch Of Love (Everyday) (Keyboard Express Mix)
Here's presenting you with another fantastic house classic, delivered by the wonderful vocal talents of Ms Chaka Khan.
This is one of Frankie Knuckles all time favourite tracks.
What better compliment could a track have.
The original first came out in 1980, but it is the C&C remix that I like best.
It is absolutely piano-licious - have listen and you'll know what I mean.
C&C produced some wonderful remixes and this is up there with their best.
Love it.
Enjoy!!!
Now there can be no doubting that this track is a PCC of the highest order.
I'm sure that I read somewhere that it (the Seduction version) was one of Alistair Whitehead's favourite all time tracks. Great praise indeed as Mr Whitehead is a DJ of impeccable musical taste.
So which version is best?
The Seduction version or the Ann-Maire Smith version.
Do you know what I can't choose, as they are both bloody great tracks.
The Seduction version from 1989 is a true classic (produced by C&C and with fantastic vocals by the wonderful Martha Wash) and many will probably feel original tracks of such quality shouldn't be re-worked as they are never as good, but the Ann-Marie Smith version from 1995 certainly does it more than justice.
It raises the tempo and just belts it out with a really great vocal performance to boot.
My money's on the Ann-Marie Smith (but only just), it's that belting piano that just swings it.
Let's face it both are true PCCs.
Seduction - (You're My One And Only) True Love (New York House Mix 2)
Ann-Marie Smith - (You're My One And Only) True Love
Another fantastic track my the legend that is Ms Mariah Carey. She has the absolute perfect voice to complement dance tracks and thanks to a superb remix by Clivillés and Cole, we have another huge PCC. There was a period in the early 90's when C&C were churning out tracks and remixes like you wouldn't believe. They were certainly the hottest remixers in clubland in that era. About the track, this ones from 1994 and as you'd expect the vocals are amazing, complemented with some great bits of piano, gives a superb house track. Remember what Mariah is singing to you "Anytime You Need A Friend, I Will Be Here" Enjoy peeps!!
Mariah Carey - Anytime You Need A Friend (C&C Extended Mix)
Now there are club classics and there are Pure Club Classics - and then there's this track, which is one of the most important tracks in clubland history and probably one of the most widely played.
When it came out in 1992 it was hammered by any and every DJ worth his salt. For about 12 months you heard it in every single club you went to and rightly so as it was just such an immense track.
With a fantastic atmospheric build up and then when that piano dropped in it was a pure truly magical moment. This was the track that always set the dancefloor alight, the one that everyone loved and one that no matter what time of night, what state of mind, it always just hit the right spot. A truly awesome track!!!
Why didn't it make my PCC All Time Top 30 - well only because it is so well known and has perhaps just lost that touch of mystique. But hey, that doesn't detract from it being one of the true PCCs of all time.
It was also probably the first track which created a "mash up" when it was overlayed with Degrees of Motion's "Do You Want It Right Now".
Since then it has become part of more "mash ups" then probably any other track in club history.
I've tried to include some of the best, however IMHO - you can't beat the original, closely followed by the Degrees of Passion "mash up". The passion of your paasion mix is also great with soem subtle vocals!
Get on it people, they don't come much better than this!!!!
In my mind Taylor Dayne was always an average chart fodder type singer and then people starting remixing her tracks which this had a great effect and complemented her vocal qualities.
This one is one you'll all of heard before, but it has some fantastic production by C&C.
Some great bits of piano turn it into a true club classic.
A truly amazing tune. In my mind this was the first really big Mariah club track. (I think Make It Happen came shortly after) It was one which I remember being hammered by Sasha and rightly so because it's superb.
It dates back to 1991 and Clivillés and Cole really were the hottest remixers around at that time. They were also highly prolific and they put out some fantastic stuff in the space of about 18 months. I'm sure you've all got great dancefloor memeories of this one.
As a further tribute to MJ, I've included what in my opinion are his 6 finest dancefloor "club classic" tracks. Some of these are really fantastic and difficult to get hold of.
4 of them have been posted on the blog previously, but I've re-posted them collectively as a special tribute to the the legend that is MJ.
As usual the Brothers in Rhythm remixes are amazing, particularly the Smooth Criminal and Wanna Be Startin' Something tracks.
The Frankie Knuckles - Rock With You remix is also amazing.
For all MJ fans out there and all dance music lovers, enjoy and also leave your comments.
I think everyone that's walked this planet has an opinion on Michael Jackson and whether it is good or bad, there is no mistaking that he was a genius and one of the greatest pop stars that ever lived.
The man could sing, dance, write music, create trends, break new music, you name it, he did it.
I'm sure we all have our personal MJ favourites and a few of his tracks which have been remixed to great effect by BiR and Frankie Knuckles have been posted earlier on this blog.
However, there's one song which most brings back great memories for me and one I particularly remember at Leeds Warehouse on New Years Eve in 1991 when Sasha dropped it.
A great track and a superb remix, by C&C who were the real hot remixers at that time (this was the mix that rocked the dancefloors in clubland).
I've also got a fantastic mix of this track on a DJ mix tape that'll I dig out and post shortly.
Enjoy the track - let's celebrate the live of MJ; a true music legend. R.I.P.
Re-posting this (no, the track not the picture), simply because it is one of the all time great club tracks.
It is such a good track that it simply had to go back on the blog.
Absolutely hammered in the day by all the top DJ's, notably Sasha and it was a huge Hacienda classic and that is where I remember it best. A true classic!!
It's the tune, the rhythm, the vocals, the lyrics, the piano - all simply awesome.
From those first opening lines;
"I can feel you staring, your eyes undressing me, every time I'm near you boy, my heart skips a beat"
"Stop anticipating don't play hide and seek, my love's for the taking, if you're playing for keeps"
-
"Turn around make your move, wait too long and you might lose , don't you wanna be mine, don't wanna be mine"
Sheer quality!!
What better way to celebrate my 200th Post!!! With many more to come!!
