The power of the riff!!!

Here's some fantastic tracks and remixes all based around the same riff.
Nikita Warren's classic house track from 1991 "I Need You" contains that piano riff that as soon as you hear it you think "oh yeah, loving this".
This was also the basis for the Raplhie Roasario track "An Instrumental Need" which was massive in clubs in 1992. A true house classic.
Then there was Nush by Nush, which was absolutely massive in clubs and a true PCC, again based around the same piano riff.
That's the great thing about house music, if somebody creates something good it certainly get's used time and time again.
There are so many good remixes of "I Need You" that I couldn't decide which to post, as they are all wonderful, largely due to that fantastic piano riff.
Also check out the Joey Negro mix - very different but still tops.
Out of all the tracks I think the Nush track is the real stand out one IMHO, as it was immense when played out in clubs, although all the tracks listed are certainly true PCCs in their own right.

Yes Way, Jose

It is only fitting in such glorious weather that we should post a track whose tone is entirely evocative of the White Island. A blissful, ambient number in its original form featuring the husky tones of Angela John (aka Neve), 'Who Do You Love' was turned over to Chicane, to render a characteristic laid-back, floaty trance excursion in his own unmistakable style. This version was culled from the Manifesto CD single, and, despite claiming to be an edit, weighs in at seven or so minutes.

One They Made Earlier

This ostensibly-little known track was, by my estimation, crying out to be posted. Causing barely a ripple upon its release in the summer of '96, tech-trance don Blu Peter's most commercial offering constitutes an epic - if frantic - proto-trance/hardbag affair. The more minimal  and technoid 'Arabesque mix' appeared on various Reactivate compilations around the same time, but the main room club mix, as featured here, showcases breathy vocals and some seriously phenomenal 303, of which Hardfloor themselves would surely have been proud.

High Voltage

Originally released in 1993, this uplifting vocal number followed hot on the heels of Transformer 2's best known track 'Pacific Symphony'. In January '96 'Just Can't Get Enough' received a commercial UK release on Positiva, featuring a riot of remixes from Ken Doh and the ever-dependable Goodfellos (better known as Tall Paul and Tin Tin Out). Transformer 2's own 1995 remix is the pick of the bunch for me, a piano stormer with insistent vocals that still sounds great.

Here we are back with a bang!!!

Alright people I hope you are all well.
I told you it wouldn't keep us down long.
I've opened another mediafire account, so while they have 10,000 plus of my tracks locked away, I've got the large majority of them on my hard drive anyway.
So I've simply opened another separate account with mediafire.
The only problem is that all the old links will have to be replaced which is some task as there are over 1000 posts and that will also mean uploading all those 1000 tracks to mediafire again.
I'm going to work on the basis that you will have most of the old posts and hence I'll just start with the recent posts.
If anyone finds any links that they want that are blocked just send an email to the usual PCC address.
Ok, enough of all that now back to the music.
This was a cracking track back in 1992 - a tad on the commercial side and with a certain element of cheese, but all that said a really superb uplifting track with some great piano.
Also with some fantastic vocals by Anne Marie Smith - boy that lady can sing!!!
It is of course a re-working of the original version by John Miles dating back to 1977.
Going forward I'm going to add You Tube links rather then mediafire links, then that way it will hopefully avoid the problems we've recently had. If it isn't on You Tube, then the PCC team will upload it to You Tube.

An absolutely immense remix of a truly classic Depeche track.
I've always loved Depeche's tracks and they were one of the few British bands who truly cracked America.
This was probably my favourite Depeche track and there have been very few of their tracks which have been remixed well and converted to clubland!
This one is the exception though, it retains all the best bits of the original and that wonderful riff, but combines it with a pounding, pumping acid trance vibe which keeps on building and building and then comes back again and finally finishes with a lovely piano tinged fade out.
A really top remix of one of the great pop tracks.

A real Oakey banger!!!

Used to love this one (and still do!!).
It was a massive Oakey track back in 1996 and still retains the same old magic today.
There were loads of remixes done and some pretty good, but it is still the Original Mix that does it for me.
It's funny with House tracks the remixes nearly always seem to be better than the original, but with trance tracks the Original Mix's nearly always do it for me.
Look people if you don't like this one, then you don't like trance baby!!

Just a touch of Love - oh yeah!!!

Here's an absolutely blinding house classic.
Don't be put off by remembering back to the cheesy version which hit the pop charts in 1990.
This mix is the real deal.
It's an amazing track which feels like about 5 tracks in one, it changes style and tempo so many times and keeps you entirely engrossed throughout.
It's got some great piano laced in, thumping, crunching beats, but the best bit is when the riff kicks in at 2mins 32 secs. That is one massive moment. Just tops!!!
Also give it a few listens as it gets better every time you listen to it.
Love the ending as well when they are all chattering!
It was a big Hacienda classic to boot and hammered by Mr Park.
Clivilles and Cole were one of the greatest remix combo's ever and produced some remarkable tracks back in't day. This is one of their finest. Immense in every way.
If you don't like this, then you don't like house music period!!!

It is a truly delightful piece of music, certainly less clubby but certainly not less impressive.

Screemingly Good

This stupendous track comprises the first of several 'unreleased classics' which I aim to post in the next few weeks. Following something of a hiatus, Sunscreem resurfaced in 1997 with 'Catch', their first release on the legendary Pulse 8 label. Featuring quality remixes from luminaries such as Red Jerry, Andy Ling and Matt Darey, 'Catch' destroyed many a dancefloor in its wake. The follow-up single was to be 'Cover Me', and remixes were duly commissioned from the Trouser Enthusiasts. Unfortunately, Pulse 8 - the label that introduced the world to Rozalla, Urban Cookie Collective and Band of Gypsies - went bust prior to the commercial pressing of 'Cover Me', and the record went unreleased, as did the much sought-after album 'Out of the Woods'. An edit of the TE remix appeared on the 'Ten Mile Bank' opus, but this didn't really do justice to the sweeping, roof-raising epic nature of the full length Trouser Enthusiasts remix. This is an incredible track, combining the club savvy of Suncreem, arguably the first true dance band, with the Trouser Enthusiasts' epic sensibilities. It was a bugger to get hold of at the time, and remains one of TEs' finest-ever reworks.

I Need A Witness

From one house classic to the next, 'Can I Get A Witness?' - by former Sounds of Blackness singer Ann Nesby - was utterly ubiquitous towards the end of 1996. Released on the legendary AM:PM label, which brought us innumerable high calibre tracks from the likes of Love Tribe, Submerge and Masters At Work, 'Witness' is surely representative of Mousse T's finest hour. Funky beyond measure and equipped with some seriously earth-shaking vocals, 'Can I Get A Witness?' has retained its anthemic status despite some rather unusual subject matter.

1000 Posts and still going strong!!!

It gives me great pleasure to announce the 1000th post on the PCC blog.
The blog has now been running for over 3 years and in that time we have posted some (most of) the greatest tracks to ever hit our dancefloors.
A big shout out to all those who have followed the blog over the years, those who provide regular feedback and interaction, not forgetting the wider PCC team, that being those that have posted and contributed tracks to the blog over the years.
I've always said that this blog is for all you out there and is a place to come to share in the finest delights of the dance music world. That said it's also about giving something back and all we ever ask is for comments and feedback on the tracks you download, so you too can share your thoughts and experiences of these fantastic tracks.
One track which has not been posted to date and is one that really should have been, is this one;

It sort of feels right to be posting a classic which was pretty much where it all started.
It's amazing to think that this is now 26 years old (this year) and it still sounds amazing!!

Staying on the piano tip!!

This one just fits the bill.
It's a great piano tinged club classic, which combines some great piano with some superb vocals to give a huge hands in the air anthem.

Where Memories Are Made

This is again one of those rare records whereupon every version wrought was unutterably sublime. Beyond sublime, in fact; I would go as far as to venture other-worldly. 

Ben Watt was responsible for the astounding, 'then again' radio version which graced Beth Orton's eponymous album, whilst Joe Claussell ratcheted the tempo a few notches in his 'Spiritual Life/Ibadan remix', a laidback house affair replete with  insistently gorgeous guitar. 

Deep Dish provide one of the keystone remixes of their lengthy and illustrious career in the shape of this remould, with its dangerously hypnotic hooks and immense breakdown roughly two thirds of the way through. 

Quite why this remix hasn't entered the canon of clubland lore remains a mystery; it is a hugely poignant and introspective track that harbours some amazing memories, evoking the unseasonable Indian summer of 1999 and the apex of my own teenage years.

Let the Heavens Open

This rather unique track appeared at the end of 1995 on FFRR, and was utterly ubiquitous at the time. Some sixteen years later, the spoken-word vocal may seem a bit naff, but the immensity of the sirens presaging the gargantuan breakdown cannot be denied. This about as unsubtle as they come; it has drama, it has bombast, it has rich orchestration; it is a colossus of a record that stood out at a time when almost every dance music production to receive a commercial release was a bona fide classic. The alternative mix, titled 'Symphonic  variations' is twenty minutes long and interposes much more of the female vocal, whilst entirely excising the spoken-word elements. A stalwart of the Essential Mix for a while, I've no idea who is behind 'Are You Out There?' or indeed 'that shroud', but this monster is in need of some well-deserved exposure.

Disco Citizenship

This stunning, ethereal floaty-trance number surfaced at the beginning of 1997 and received a rather low-key release on Edel. Chicane dons his Disco Citizens guise to deliver a sensational remix, not one of the best known Chicane re-works, but definitely one of the best, and a sorely underrated classic. In return for remixing the track, Luce Drayton provided vocals for the album version of 'Sunstroke' on Chicane's magnum opus 'Far From the Maddening Crowds'.

That's Champion

This trailblazing track was produced by Rollo and Rob Dougan, and, when first released in 1994, largely introduced the world to the booming vocals of Kristine W. 

Featuring classy mixes from Our Tribe and Junior Vasquez, 'Feel What You Want' became something of a sleeper hit, and its enduring popularity witnessed a re-release in 1997, this time featuring a whole host of re-interpretations from the likes of Victor Imbres and Peter Ries. 

Though the original remains arguably the best, this epic trance variation from the legendary Richard Dekkard elevates it to a whole new plane. 

Unfortunately, Champion Records still insist upon re-releasing 'Feel What You Want' every couple of years or so, each successive remix package serving to further debase the enduring 1994 and 1997 mixes.

Welcome to Madchester!!

This track that spawned Indie Dance.
A superb remix from Oakey and Osborne with a little help from Terry Farley as well I believe.
This track from 1989 was of huge significance in the dance music/e culture/clubbing scene for many reasons.
1. It kick started the Indie Dance scene.
2. It kick started the Happy Mondays career
3. It kick started Paul Oakenfold's remix career
4. It created the Madchester vibe.
The Mondays took many trips to Spectrum in London, a night run by Paul Oakenfold and along with Shoom the most significant clubs in bringing the Ibizian vibe back to the UK and kick starting the Acid House scene.
Spectrum also had nights at Legends in Manchester on a Monday.
The vital ingredient in all this was "ecstasy" and this became the launch pad for the Madchester scene.
I hope this explains it all (kind of).
If not check the video it was created in Legends in Manchester, I think it explains what was going on!!
About the track, well it's just sensational.
Shaun's poetic sprawling vocals, that fantastic repetitive guitar riff and those big synth drops.
Massive in every way - Madchester vibes in the place indeed.
There's a Vince Clarke remix of this track as well which is good, but IMHO this is "the" mix.
Once you've heard this, there is no other.

In These Hard Times

Another understated release, 'Hard Times' was issued on the Top Banana label in 1997. Produced by the legendary Rob Dougan, and with vocals supplied by Sabrina Johnston, 'Hard Times' was one of the best tracks ever to have been emerged from that label. A hardbag-inspired, driving vocal number with insightful, lamenting lyrics (which might be more relevant now than they ever were fifteen years since), 'Hard Times' exemplified the contemporary sound of Rob Dougan and his then-label-mates and co-producers Rollo, Goetz and Sister Bliss.

A Sow's Ear & A Silk Purse

As much as I like Moby, I could never abide his far-too-frequent forays into thrash metal. 

The awful 'Animal Rights' album is the foremost example of this ill-advised genre-bending, and it was that opus from which 'That's When I Reach For My Revolver' was culled. 

Barely listenable in its original form - unless you are a fan of Slipknott - the track has been completely deconstructed and remade by those stalwarts of the dance music scene, Rollo & Sister Bliss. 

A building, hypnotic epic wrought in their own singular style, Rollo & Bliss' production values perfectly complement Moby's introspective vocal. 

If ever there was an instance of a turd being successfully polished, then this remix is proof of that concept.

All Mouth and Trousers

November 1997 witnessed the release of 'Mouth' by Rochelle, on the Almighty label. The archetypal remix was provided by the ever-dependable Trouser Enthusiasts who, by teaming up with Channel Islands-based trance producer Skynet, turn in a rip-roaring, Earth-shattering epic which makes excellent use of the fantastic vocals. This probably parallels the greatest TE remixes of the era; the track itself comprising another under-appreciated classic which pretty much sank without trace following its commercial release.

French Fusion

'Saving Mary' was released by Indie-pop ensemble Fused at the end of 2000. I don't really recollect too much in relation to the original version, but this remix by Bob Sinclar is a stonker. Mr Sinclar is at the top of his game here, fashioning a smooth piece of devastatingly catchy French house entirely suited to the quirky vocal. I don't think this was much of a hit upon its release - though, indisputably it deserved to be - and Fused's follow-up single, the double A-sided Cevin Fisher and Lucid-remixed 'Twisted'/'Terror' seemed to make more of an impact upon club consciousness.

Put Your Mind Down

Here is an underrated classic of the highest possible caliber. The lesser-known follow up to 'Maria', 'Nothing Is Real But the Girl' was released at some point in 1999. Danny Tenaglia was commissioned to craft the club-oriented rework, an undertaking he fulfills with some aplomb. DT's version is nothing short of spectacular, translating as a song in its own right, rather than just a remix. It is the work of pure genius, and it has everything - pathos, funk, euphoria, insight, inspiration - definitely and without a shadow of a doubt, a bona fide PCC.

Planetary

Here's an ostensibly little-known belter from Michael Kilkie's Scottish Limbo/23rd Precinct label. Released at the end of 1996, when the burgeoning 'epic house' movement was in full swing, 'Talk To Me' is the very embodiment of that sound. With its big diva vocals and dreamy instrumentation, 'Talk To Me' is representative of a relatively short-lived sub-genre that was, in its day, utterly huge.

A Nod and a Wink

Every so often, a track comes along that completely blows your mind and confounds your expectations. Such was the case with 'I'm Ready', an unrelenting hypnotic groove replete with a Barbara Tucker sample chucked in for good measure. It is perhaps the breakdown that makes this track so special, it is absolutely unremitting - almost to the point of giving the impression that it will literally go on forever, prior to eventually exploding and taking the roof with it. This track was issued at the end of 1995, in the wake of the unprecedented chart success of 'Higher State of Consciousness'. 'I'm Ready' was play-listed by Radio 1. I can't imagine tuning into a commercial radio station these days and having my senses assailed by such an underground number. How times have changed; for the worse, in my estimation.

Living the Hi Life

Another classic BBG production. Another typically quality Hi Life release. Featuring West End musical star the late Erin Lordan on vocals, BBG's original mix (which I have somewhere, but cannot seem to locate at present) is a soaring trancer that received an unusual volume of commercial radio play in the weeks leading up to its release. Multiple mixes abound - from Atlas, Paganini Traxx and BBG themselves - but my favourite is this version from Chicane, who dons his Disco Citizens guise to deliver an archetypal lush, laidback epic. Chicane's production is so suited to the original track that it is quite difficult to consider the fact that this is in actual fact a remix. Unfortunately, this was to be one of the last releases on the Hi Life label, until it folded later in '97 - its closure occasioning BBG's follow up single, 'Do Anything', to remain forever unreleased.

A Cheeky Number

'Constantly Waiting' was released on Cheeky in the summer of '96. A lilting, downtempo number in its original guise, the track was overhauled by Cheeky stablemates Rollo & Sister Bliss, who inject an almost unhealthy dose of epic into proceedings. By incorporating a Spanish guitar into the immense breakdown, they imbue the track with a Mediterranean feel, the mood of which perfectly complements Taylor's characteristically insightful vocals. This record was everywhere for several months, then seemed almost to disappear without trace, rendering it something of an overlooked classic.

Oh yes, She Does!

This is just absolutely immense. 

I have been a huge fan of John Graham's since first encountering mid-nineties Perfecto tracks such as 'Believe In Me' and 'I Dream', which I would scurry down to my local Our Price to purchase on cassette single as soon as they were available. 

The 2000-released 'She Does' remains, in my opinion, his finest composition, outmatching even 'Everything's Not You'. 

Anyone who was once part of the Tilt triumvirate can do absolutely no wrong in my book, and Quivver is one of those rare producers who is a singer-songwriter to boot; very much in the same vein as BT and Moby. 

This understated epic is wrought in characteristically proggy style, and at once manages to be both hypnotic and massively uplifting.

Heartening

Nineteen-ninety-six was a stellar year for the React label, which continued to push the boundaries in dance with a slew of innovative compilations, as well as individual artist releases. The fourth single from Mrs Wood was released in the summer of that year, in the shape of 'Heartbreak'. The follow-up to her immense, TDV remixed 'Joanna'; 'Heartbreak' features the inimitable Eve Gallagher on vocal duties. The original version is unabashedly cheesy, and all the better for it, whilst Mrs Wood & Kevin White's 'Whitewood' sobriquet offers up a techno-hard trance variation. The 'Working Hard' mix was produced by CJ Scott of the Happy Clappers, and showcases that act's trademark piano-based sound, as interposed with the highly distinctive vocals. This is not the best-known release in the React back catalogue, yet it is definitely up there with their best output.

A Forgotten Gem

'Standing Here All Alone' was released on Positiva in May 1996, to relatively little fanfare. Produced by Gems For Jem and remixed by Sharp and Hula, the main mix is a synth-heavy, infectious vocal number showcasing the immense vocals of Michelle Narine, whose lungs also graced the 'Playing With Stones' bootleg mix of 'What You Do' by Big Bass, a couple of years later. This is one of Gems For Jem's best productions, and is definitely a track that would benefit from a little more exposure in order to rightly venerate it as the classic it is.

Can You Hear Me?

Mary Kiani was originally the vocalist for Scottish Rave outfit The Time Frequency, who were responsible for some of the higher-octane and screamingly euphoric rave records of the early 1990s. She was eventually signed to the Mercury label as a solo artist, and her debut single, 'When I Call Your Name' was released in August 1995. The track features a variety of remixes in an array of styles, from the likes of Nightcrawlers, Eddy Fingers and Motiv 8. The Hardfloor mix, though, really stands head and shoulders above the rest, being as it is pervaded with their trademark 303 squelch. At once evoking Sourmash and Robert Armani, care has been taken not to diminish the powerhouse vocals.

The Crichton Factor

Mary Kiani's second single was the double A sided 'I Imagine'/'I Give It All to You'. The Eddy Fingers edit of the former track has been posted previously, and rightly exalted as an absolute classic of the first order. The B side is a bagpipe-dominated dirge in its original form, which was entrusted to Stuart Crichton's Umboza project to reshape. Dispensing almost entirely with the vocal - save for a rather insistent refrain - Umboza delivers a dramatic, hardbag style twist hewn with a tinge of acid. All in all this nicely complements Mary Kiani's extensive remix back catalogue. Indeed, there were so many remixes of her tracks floating about at any one time, that it was often a struggle to keep up.

This one goes back to 1992  and is another which brings back great memories of the Hac.
A really simple happy piano tune.
I also love the bit when she sings (what sounds like) "How can I make you rub me the right way".

Funky Trousers

This monster largely slipped under the radar upon its release at the back end of 1998, arguably the most prolific year for the Trouser Enthusiasts, who were very much in demand to remix artists as diverse as Mansun and the Pet Shop Boys. Not long after this track was released The Trouser Enthusiasts collaborated with JX and Oakenfold to produce one of the best selling vocal trance numbers of all time in the shape of 'Bullet in the Gun'. This release of this latter track coincided with the TE moniker being laid to rest, as the Enthusiasts began recording under the Perfecto-signed guise of Monoboy.

'Funky Love' is one of my favourite TE remixes, and showcases their singular style at its very best in producing a soaring trance soundscape whilst retaining sparse snippets of the original vocal. The photograph is of Kavanagh QC, though it is unlikely that the vocals on this track were supplied by the late John Thaw.

Thanks to some fantastic recent posts by Rich and Adam, I can take a bit of a back seat on the PCC blog and leave it to them to keep you fulfilled with the finest quality dance music from yesteryear.

Give Me A Call

‘Change Your Mind’ was released on the More Protein imprint in 1994, and constituted Eve Gallagher’s fourth single for that label, the best known of which was undoubtedly ‘Love Come Down’. ‘Change Your Mind’ was produced by Evolution, and remixed by Diss-Cuss, the latter being very prolific around the ’94 period before ostensibly disappearing altogether. The next release from Eve Gallagher was to be issued on Cleveland City, in the shape of the Ramp-remixed ‘You Can Have It All’ – one of my all time favourite tracks.

Following the success of both ‘Eugina’ – an ahead of its time, chill-trance masterpiece - and their debut album ‘Wave Breaks’, Salt Tank were commissioned to remix one of the defining records of the dance music canon. Executed in their inimitable, Ibiza infused, trancey vein, Salt Tank offer up a complete overhaul of the original record, delivering a spectacular remix which ought to have attracted more attention that it did, upon its release on Distinctive in the autumn of 1997.

More Trouser Enthusiasts Magic

In its original form, ‘Alane’ constitutes a world music number, which initially received a US release in 1997 – with remixes from Tony Moran and Todd Terry – prior to landing on these shores early the following year. The Trouser Enthusiasts were duly drafted in to supply the archetypal remix, and serve up one of their finest recreations to date, an epic trancer nicely complemented and offset by the unusual, African vocals.

Ore-struck

The Original's 'I Luv U Baby' originally surfaced on the Ore label in 1994 and became something of a sleeper hit. The following summer, the track was re-released and became completely ubiquitous, having since been played to death by many an over-zealous radio station. The follow up single, 'B 2gether', caused less of a stir when it was issued in the Autumn of '95, but is, in my estimation, the better track. DJ Pippi's original showcases a much more mellow, Balearic vibe, whilst Dancing Divaz ratchet it up a few notches with their typically euphoric club and dub mixes.

Another trance classic from the summer of 1997, 'The Journey' was unleashed by Platipus, who commissioned the Trouser Enthusiasts to deliver the definitive version. The subsequent soaring trance soundscape elevated 'The Journey' into classic status, remaining as it does a highlight of the Platipus back catalogue. This remix sees Trouser Enthusiasts on characteristically top form, though it is a little more serious and a touch less playful than some of their pop-based remoulds of mainstream acts such as the Pet Shop Boys and Fierce.

Saying Grace

'Skin On Skin' was initially released at the beginning of 1996, and was originally loosely based on the Perfecto remix of U2's 'Lemon'. Oakenfold & Osbourne duly forged an instrumental track from the aforementioned 'Lemon', which they titled 'Orange'. When Dominique Atkins' vocals were applied to the latter it became 'Skin On Skin', the third single from the Grace project and one that proved a sizeable club and chart hit. Some eighteenth months later, a clutch of remixes were issued of various Grace tracks, the highlight of which was the Legend B remix of 'Skin On Skin'. Legend B completely remade the track, dropping the vocal almost entirely save for the insistent whisper of 'Skin On Skin', prior to building to a thunderous, synth-infused crescendo. Another underrated track, the Legend B remix of 'Skin On Skin' remains one of the defining trance records of 1997.
